Higher Education System in Japan
The higher education system in Japan includes:
1.University ( Daigaku):
Universities in Japan are academic institutions that students can enter after completing 12 years of schooling. Undergraduate programs typically last four years (six years for fields like medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy). Universities offer a wide range of academic subjects and grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. They are categorized as national (run by the central government), public (managed by local governments), or private (independently operated). Many universities are now offering English-taught programs to attract international students.
2. Graduate School (Daigakuin):
Graduate schools provide advanced education and research opportunities beyond the undergraduate level. A master’s program usually takes two years, while doctoral programs take three to five years. There are also professional graduate schools offering practical education in areas like law, business, and public policy. Graduate schools are typically part of universities, and admission requires at least a bachelor’s degree. These institutions focus heavily on research and specialized knowledge.
3. College of Technology (Kōtō Senmon Gakkō or Kōsen):
Colleges of Technology are unique to Japan and focus on developing engineers and technicians through hands-on technical education. Students enter after completing junior high school (around age 15), and the standard program lasts five years. These colleges specialize in engineering, electronics, information technology, and maritime fields. Graduates can either join the workforce directly or transfer to the third year of a university program. Kōsen are highly respected for producing skilled technical professionals.
4. Specialized Training College ( Senmon Gakkō):
Specialized training colleges offer vocational and practical education in fields such as fashion, IT, tourism, culinary arts, nursing, and design. Programs typically last one to three years and require 12 years of prior education for admission. These colleges focus on career-ready skills and often include internships or hands-on training. Upon graduation, students receive a diploma or certificate, and in some cases, can transfer to a university for further study. These schools are popular among students seeking quick entry into specific careers.
5. Japanese Language Institute (Nihongo Kyōiku Kikan):
Japanese language institutes help international students gain the language proficiency needed to enter universities, vocational schools, or the job market in Japan. Course lengths vary from six months to two years. These institutes focus on teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, and often prepare students for exams like the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) or EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission). Many international students begin their academic journey in Japan at these institutes.
Language and other requirements
For any program taught in Japanese, students are required to have passed the N1 and N2 JLPT examinations along with at least 250 points on the Japanese section of the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU). For courses taught entirely in English, non-native speakers are required to take IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or the Cambridge English tests.
However, students should note that even with an entirely English-taught degree, finding a job in Japan will be easier if the student studies written and spoken Japanese daily.
To gain admission to Colleges of Technology (KOSEN) students are required to take the EJU entrance examination and participate in an interview.
Post-study opportunities
Japan has maintained a steady job situation for students after graduation, with about 97.8% employment rate. More companies have been open to international students, especially in non-manufacturing industries.
