FINLAND
Finland has been known for having one of the best school systems in the world for the past decade. Having a quality globally recognised education has proven that the country excels in its higher education as well. Good news for international students, Finland offers more than 600 English-taught bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes!
Why Finland?
Affordable education and standard of living
Non-EU nationals pay about €8,000 – €20,000 annually depending on the program and university. For tuition-paying students university-specific scholarships are provided. These scholarships are primarily merit-based. Doctoral programs are free of charge regardless of nationality.
The living cost in Finland is relatively affordable for international students as students get discounts on public transportation and student restaurants. The living cost varies depending on your study location, for example, costs will be higher in Helsinki than in other places. Additionally, students can work up to 30 hours per week, ensuring there is a proper work-study balance.
Types of Institutions
In Finland, there are two kinds of institutions:
Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS): UAS are focused on the labour market, forming a smooth transition from education to workforce. These universities offer courses in bachelor’s, master’s, professional specialisation, and professional teacher education levels. UAS selects students majorly through entrance exams.
Universities: Universities aim to advance knowledge through scientific research while offering undergraduate and postgraduate education grounded in both scientific and artistic disciplines. Universities offer courses at the bachelor’s, master’s, and postgraduate levels. A Bachelor’s degree in Finland typically takes three years to complete, except for programs like medicine, which require more time
Language and Tests Requirement
It is not difficult to manage your daily life in Finland even if you are not fluent in Finnish, as most Finns have a good command of English. However, learning a new language is always a rewarding challenge and an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and connect with the local community.
Furthermore, some admissions require entrance exams, SATs, GMAT and interviews depending on your programme. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate their proficiency through tests like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Cambridge English tests.
Scholarships
The types of scholarships, for bachelor’s and master’s degrees available in Finland vary between institutions. Scholarship information is provided alongside admission details during the application process.
For doctoral students, there are no tuition fees and Finland offers the EDUFI fellowship grant to recruit deserving foreign students for doctoral research.

This Nordic country is the ultimate destination for people who seek outdoor adventures. The country is about 70% forest, offering endless opportunities for outdoor exploration and activities and not to forget the brilliant displays of the northern lights!
Finland is one of the safest destinations in Europe, not only due to its low imprisonment rates but also to its commitment to equality. With smaller income disparities and a lower risk of marginalisation compared to the EU average, Finland creates a more inclusive and secure environment for all.
